Sizing Your Shakuhachi
Properly sizing a shakuhachi can feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. This guide will help you understand how to find the right fit, empowering you to purchase with confidence. While playing an instrument that ideally suits your body is best, you might also want or need to play larger shakuhachi.
I’ve helped countless individuals determine the appropriate sizes for comfortable and safe play, and taught just as many how to properly play larger instruments. I’m happy to share this information so you can enjoy playing without discomfort or strain.
The photos below illustrate all the measurements I request. With these, I can pinpoint your ideal shakuhachi length, your safe maximum, and your absolute ergonomic limit (recommended only for advanced players and shorter sessions).
For accurate finger measurements, lay a solid ruler flat on a table. Gently press your hand and fingers down. You only need to measure one side of your body, unless there are notable differences between your left and right.
While these measurements may seem extensive, they are crucial for a proper fit. Naturally, pushing ergonomic limits requires time for your body to adapt. Similarly, beginners often need time to get accustomed to holding any shakuhachi length. Happy playing! Josen
