Japanese Madake bamboo for shakuhachi

Friends, I was very fortunate to be able to acquire 240 pieces of 30+ year old Madaké bamboo from Japan. This is a rare occurrence as there is no such thing as a ‘steady supply’ for such old pieces. After twenty-three years of crafting shakuhachi, I feel that this bamboo came at just the right time. Perhaps, a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ for me.

In the final video, at the end, I show you the inherent rarity of bamboo just the right length for one-piece key of A (one-piece means no cutting and jointing). There were even fewer measuring out to be one-piece 1.8 D. I explain why this is the case with one-piece shakuhachi in my entry titled, Jinashi and Jimori vs. Jiari.

Enjoy seeing these beautiful treasures. Let’s look forward to hearing each one as I craft them into shakuhachi! J
